Sterling, Kan. - In dramatic fashion, the Sterling College Lady Warriors Women's Soccer Team advanced to the Semi-Final Round of the 2010 KCAC Tournament with a shoot-out victory over McPherson. Sterling goalkeeper Paige Farmer came up with four, in lack of a better adjective, ginormous (giant mixed with enormous) saves in the shoot-out to propel the Lady Warriors into the semi-finals.
In the first half of the match, Sterling's Anely Laguna gave the Lady Warriors a 1-0 lead when she put the ball into the back of the net past McPherson keeper Molly Whitwell. The lead did not last long. Soon after the Sterling goal, McPherson's Haley Cook put a shot into the side net from 30 yards out. With the goal, the Bulldogs tied the match at 1-1 and the half finished at 1-1.
Play flowed back and forth between the two teams in the second half with both teams controlling the game in about seven minute intervals. Both teams would have chances to score in the second half, but neither team would be able to capitalize. At the end of regulation, the score was still 1-1.
The first overtime period was controlled by Sterling, but the Lady Warriors were unable to put a ball in the back of the net. Neither team controlled the second overtime period nor was there ever a true threat on goal by either team. After both overtime periods, the score was still 1-1, necessitating a shoot-out.
In a soccer shoot-out, each team gets five shooters. If the game is still tied after five shooters, each team gets one additional shooter until the tie is broken. Shots are taken in alternating order.
McPherson‘s Cook was the first shooter in the shoot-out. Her shot would be stopped by Farmer who would make a kick safe after initially moving away from the shot. The save would give Sterling a chance to take a 1-0 lead in the shoot-out after the first round of shots.
Kylie Yates would take the first shot for Sterling. Her shot attempt would go wide left, and the shoot-out would be tied at 0-0 after the first round of shots.
Amanda Aragon was the second McPherson shooter and would also be thwarted by Farmer. The save would be Farmer's second in the shoo-out, giving the Lady Warriors another chance to take a lead.
Morgan Martin was the second Sterling shooter and her shot would go over the frame. Sterling would be unable to capitalize on Farmer's two early saves because the SC shooters failed to even find the target.
Richelle Mascaro would be the third shooter for McPherson. Farmer would come up big again for SC, saving her third penalty kick in a row. Sterling would have another chance to take the lead in the shoot-out.
Sterling would finally capitalize as Yesenia Garcia would put the ball past Whitwell, giving the Lady Warriors a 1-0 lead in the shoot-out after three shots.
Cheyna Buchman would tie it up for McPherson, putting a ball into the upper corner of the goal where Farmer would have no chance at saving it.
Farmer would get the chance to help out her own cause as the fourth shooter for SC. With all the confidence in the world, Farmer put the ball into the back of the net to give Sterling the lead back 2-1.
Rachel Cornell would be the fifth shooter for McPherson. Her shot would go into the upper corner of the goal and was another unreachable ball for Farmer.
Joanne Williams would have a chance to win the game for Sterling, but her shot would go wide left. Being tied after five shooters meant that the two teams would now alternate one shooter at a time. The first team to score without an opposing team answer would win the match.
Stachea Perea would force Sterling's back against the wall early, slipping a shot by Farmer. Farmer would get a hand on the ball, but was unable to push it wide.
With the season riding on her shot, Sterling's Lacey Rhodes would keep the Warriors alive. Rhodes's shot would coolly, calmly, and confidently put the ball in the back of the net, forcing another round of shots.
Whitney Smith would get the next chance for McPherson. Smith's shot would force SC into another must score situation, as her shot would go past Farmer and into the back of the net.
Karina Noah would force another round of shots, blasting a strike just under the crossbar and out of Whitwell's reach.
The eighth shooter for McPherson would be Amber McKinnon. Farmer would come up huge for the Warriors again, making her fourth save of the shoot-out. Sterling would have a chance to end the match.
Pricilla Coronado would have the first chance to clinch victory for Sterling since Williams in the last of the fifth round of shots. Coronado's shot would find the back of the net, sealing a Sterling College victory and propelling the Warriors into the Semi-Finals.
Sterling will face Ottawa University in the Semi-Final Round of the KCAC Women's Soccer Tournament on Tuesday night at 7:00 pm. The game will be on The Sterling College Sports Network with the broadcast beginning about twenty minutes before kick-off.

#3 FINISH
Saturday night the Lady Warriors traveled to Bethel College where they faced the last game of the season against the Threshers. The Warriors were ready to face the Threshers as they stepped out on the field and senior Kylie Yates put one away at the back post just ten minutes into the half. The Threshers were just as ready for the Warriors. Less than 5 minutes later the Lady Threshers were able to knock a ball in after a blocked corner kick attempt. With 11 minutes left in the half junior Karina Noah was subbed onto the field and showed what she could do when she dribbled 35 yards and put the ball just over the keeper making the game 2-1.
Going into the second half the Warriors knew they would have to keep fighting hard to stay on top. Sophomore Anelly Laguna helped out the Warriors when she was able to take the ball down the middle and drill it into the back of the net giving the Warriors a bigger advantage. That advantage didn’t last for long when the Threshers were given a free kick 30 yards out and put it away making the game 3-2. The back and forth continued when senior Kylie Yates did what she’s done all season by putting in yet another goal (making it her 22nd of the season) with about 15 minutes left in the half. The Warriors were elated to put the lead at 4-2. The Threshers again answered that Sterling goal when another free kick was given to them making the game 4-3 and putting the Bethel College crowd in a frenzy as they cheered their team on. The time on the clock seemed to count down even slower as the last 10 minutes of the game winded down.
The game ended with a 4-3 WIN over the Bethel Threshers giving the Warriors a 3rd place spot in the conference and 4th place seed in the upcoming conference tournament.
This Friday at 4pm the Lady Warriors will again host McPherson College in the first round of the conference tournament.

Heartbreaking Loss
Saturday night the Lady Warriors traveled to Wichita, KS to face off with Friends Falcons as third place was on the line.
The first half came and went as the Lady Warriors worked hard out shooting the Falcons 7-1. The second half started with the Warriors determined to put one in the back of the net. Sterling again outshot Friends 6-3 in the second half trying anything to get one in the net. With less than a minute in the game it looked like all was headed into Golden Goal overtime, until SC gave up a corner. It was the Falcons last opportunity to get a goal and they were able to do just that. As the ball hit the ground right in front of the SC goal a Lady Falcon was able to slip it in the corner making it a 1-0 game with just 34 seconds left on the clock. The Falcons were able to take the game and the third place spot from the Warriors letting them slip to 5th in the conference.

WINNERS!
Yesterday afternoon the Lady Warriors came out ready to attack anything that came their way. With a tie behind them the Warriors were looking for yet another home field win, and they did just that.
The Lady Warriors welcomed senior Yessina Garcia to the field for the first time this season as she played at the top with fellow senior Kylie Yates. Southwestern College stayed packed in to their defensive half of the field giving the Lady Warrior defense the opportunity to help in the offense as well as keep the Moundbuilders to ZERO shots the entire half. The half ended with the Warriors up 1-0.
The second half started with the Warriors looking for more goals, as they continually pressured the Southwestern defense. Although the Moundbuilders were able to put together a few offensive attacks and get a few shots off they were no match for the Warriors. Junior Priscilla Coronado headed one in after teammate Lacey Rhoades hit a beautiful corner ball right into the box. Shortly later Rhoades did it again this time finding junior Morgan Martin on the back post. In the last 10 minutes of the game Yessina Garcia slipped a ball between defenders finding Kylie Yates in the box ready for whatever came her way. Yates put the ball in the corner of the net helping the Warriors rule of the Moundbuilders 4-0.
This Homecoming Saturday the Warriors face off against Kansas Wesleyan at 10am.

Warriors end in 1-1 tie
On Saturday afternoon the Warriors traveled to Hillsboro to face the Tabor Blue Jays on their new home turf. With the sun shinning and wind blowing the game started out with the Warriors going with the wind, helping them keep the ball in Blue Jay territory the majority of the first half. With the half ending at a 0-0 tie the Warriors knew that going against the wind would be more of a challenge to put points on the board.
In the 24th minute junior transfer Karina Noah put a ball just out of reach for the Blue jay keeper putting the Warriors up 1-0. The Blue jays fought back and not two minutes later evened up the score by putting one away on a corner kick from outside defender Megan Beals. Regulation time ended with a 1-1 tie sending the teams into overtime periods.
The Warriors started against the wind this time when Senior Kylie Yates blasted a ball on frame as it hit the inside cross bar, making the Warriors believe the game was over. But the Blue Jay backup goal keeper fell on the ball as it came down, making the referees call a no goal and gave the punt to the Blue Jays. Even though the Lady Warriors outshot the Blue Jays 23-7 the game ended after two full over time periods in a 1-1 tie giving the Lady Warrior a 0-0-1 start to their conference season.

WINNERS
Saturday afternoon the Lady Warriors were pumped and ready to go as they hosted their last pre-season game against York College before the start of conference next week.
York and Sterling both came out hard in the first 20 minutes of the game but an unexpected lightning delay sent both teams inside for 25 minutes until everything passed. York College came back out ready to score and they did as a wet ball slipped through the hands of goalie, Paige Farmer putting York up 1-0 in just the 25th minute of the game. The Warriors fought back and were finally able to put one away just before half time as Karina Noah crossed a ball to an open and waiting Emily Gloshen on the back post. The teams went into half time 1-1.
As the second half started to wind down it began to look like the teams would have to go into overtime but the Warriors were not having that! Sophomore Anely Laguna slipped a thru-ball into Kylie Yates giving her the perfect opportunity to put one away for the Lady Warriors with just 2 minutes left to play. The Lady Warriors WON the game 2-1 over York now making their season standings 5-4.

Tough Loss
Tuesday afternoon the Lady Warriors headed back down to Oklahoma in hopes of a WIN despite the two losses the state had previously handed over the Warriors just days before.
First half was evenly matched as NWOSU tested the Warriors defense and as the Warrior offense stuck together finding a few holes and taking some shots agains the NWOSU keeper. Late in the first half, keeper, Brittany Sieler, got hit in the face sending her off to the hospital to get stiches and leaving the goalie job to Paige Farmer. The Warriors ended the half at 0-0.
Despite the Warriors hopes the NWOSU put a goal away in the 57th minute, but like always senior Kylie Yates put one in the net to tie up the game with just 25 minutes left to play. A mistake by the Warrior defense in the 84th minute helped NWOSU put a goal and the game away, handing SC a 2-1 loss.
The Lady Warriors are now 4-4 in the season and host York College this Saturday at 2pm.

Losing Weekend
This weekend the Warrior soccer teams headed down to Oklahoma to take on back to back games Friday and Saturday afternoon.
Friday morning the bus headed out of Sterling south to Muskogee, Oklahoma where the first game against Bacone College would take place. After the long bus ride the Lady Warriors hopped off the bus looking for another win to tack onto their record. But the work of Bacone College ended up being just too much for SC. The Warriors started off slow and unorganized giving up three goals in the first half making half time quiet an event. Despite being down the Warriors came back with a vengeance as senior Kylie Yates put 2 goals in the back of the net to put the Lady Warriors on the board and back in the game. Although the Lady Warriors fought hard to come back, another goal (intended as a cross) by Bacone sealed the end of the game giving the Lady Warriors a 2-4 loss.
Saturday afternoon the SC bus headed to Bartlesville to the Oklahoma Wesleyan campus. The Lady Warriors hoped to look past their loss and to overcome Oklahoma Wesleyan. But yet again SC put themselves in a hole, ending half time down by 3. Yet again as the second half started the Lady Warriors had surge where senior Kylie Yates again put 2 points on the board giving the Warriors a ray of light as the 2nd half started winding down. Despite the late effort of the SC Warriors time wasn’t on their side as the game ended giving the Lady Warriors their second loss of the weekend 2-3.
The Warriors are now 4-3 overall and head back down to Oklahoma to face Northwestern Oklahoma on Tuesday evening.

Warriors over the OCU Eagles
With Warrior Fest games, food, and mingling behind them the Lady Warriors went after the Oklahoma Christian Eagles looking for their first home game win. The Warriors started off in a different line up with a more defensive mindset. But that didn’t stop the Eagle offense as they exposed the holes and took advantage of the new system the Warriors started with. The Eagles were able to put in a goal early in the first half but the Warriors didn’t back down. They held strong to their defense and kept the Eagles at 1 until halftime.
During halftime defensive issues were taken care of and the Warriors went back to their original 4-4-2 line up that everyone was more comfortable with.
With the line up back to normal the Warriors were all over the Eagles putting passes together and getting opportunities up front that they originally didn’t have in the first half. Finally a pass from Anely Laguna sent Kylie Yates through the Eagle defensive, beating the keeper and putting one away to get the Warriors on the board. With a point on the board the Lady Warriors kept up the intensity and fought hard giving Kylie Yates another the opportunity to once again beat the Eagle defense and drill one in the back of the net putting the Warriors on top 2-1. Despite many opportunities from the Eagle offensive they were unable to chalk up anymore goals giving the Lady Warriors their first home game win of the season.

Warriors VS Tigers @ Central Christian College
Last night the Lady Warriors headed to McPherson to challenge the Central Christian Tigers and add a W to their season standings and they were able to do just that!
The Warriors came out strong and aggressively scoring in the first five minutes by Lacey Rhoades off a pass from fellow roommate and midfielder Tiffany Delgado. Just minutes later Kylie Yates put it to the Tigers again after a deflection from their goalie put the ball right at Kylie’s feet in front of a wide open goal. Although the Warriors couldn’t put anymore away in the first half they continued to control the ball and put pressure on the Tiger defense.
When half time hit the girls were excited and determined to go back out in the 2nd half and keep at the Tigers. The second half started a bit slower but within minutes the Warriors took control and moved the ball fluidly from the back to the front putting together different combinations getting everyone involved. With just 28 minutes left Morgan Martin hit a perfect thru ball to Kylie Yates and she buried it in the back of the net sealing the game at 3-0 WIN for the Lady Warriors.
This Saturday (September 11) Warrior Fest will be happening so head to downtown Sterling for all the festivities and make sure to pick up your Warrior gear at MR.Tee!

Weekend Games
This weekend the Lady Warriors had back to back games against Avila University Friday afternoon and Manhattan Christian Saturday afternoon.
Friday was the home opener for the Lady Warriors 2010 season. The game started with quick pace and a heavy attack from Avila putting them up 2-0 in the first 30 min. But with the team work of Lacey Rhoads and Kylie Yates the warriors were able to put one on the board before the half was over. Going into the 2nd half the lady warriors knew they needed to pick up their defense and get things together with their offensive attack. But the Avila Eagles ended up being too much for the Lady Warriors as they scored 3 more goals finishing the game giving the Lady Warriors a 1-5 loss.
The girls didn't keep their heads down for long turning around on Saturday heading to Lindsborg to take on Manhattan Christian. The game started with the Warriors going against some strong wind and a packed in defense. Although the girls were able to take quiet a few hits at the goal half time score ended up 0-0. But with the wind at their backs, problems sorted out and some new subs on the field the Lady Warriors went at MC with some force. Kylie Yates scored for the Lady Warriors off a quick pass from Anely Laguna about 18 yards out. Although more shots were taken the Lady Warriors were unable to put any more points up ending the game with 1-0 win over the Manhattan Christian Crusaders.
Games continue this week for the Lady Warriors taking on Central Christian on Tuesday and Oklahoma Christian on Saturday. Hope to see you all there!

Alumni Game
Saturday morning started off with an awesome breakfast in Heritage Hall for all of the returning alumni who came back for the soccer games that afternoon. Alumni Director, David Earle came in and spoke to the crowd welcoming everyone back and encouraging the future alumni to continue to return because events like the one we were having is what keeps Sterling College going. The room was surprisingly full of alumni, in recent years not as many alumni have been able to return and play but this year was different! The women’s side had 17 returning players to take on the 2010 team. As the women’s team headed off to prepare for their game the men stayed behind to catch up, eat more food, and reflect on memories of the past.
The women’s game started at noon with the plan of playing 3- 30 minute periods. At first the alumni weren’t shaping up too poorly and held off the ‘young’ ones for the first 23 minutes of the period. Then the scoring began. The 2010 team came in hard and fast with quick passing and a lot of talking. Before the Alumni knew it, it was 2-0 during the first break between quarters. The 2nd period didn’t get any better, the alumni were tired, out of shape, and going against the wind, 3 things that make it VERY HARD to try and come back on a team full of girls that can outrun you, out dribble you, and mostly out score you! After the 2nd period Alumni made a deal with Coach Morris that we’d play a 3rd period but ONLY for 15 minutes (we prayed we could make it that long!).
While Coach Morris and the girls worked out some issues on their side the Alumni were quickly scheming a way to somehow get some more goals in this game! As a team we all decided we would start out with our 11, and every minute or so a girl from the bench would make her way onto the field while not taking off a sub Getting all the girls on the field went off with out a hitch, by 5 minutes into the last period our bench was cleared and there was almost 2 alumni for every SC player on the field. Although the plan of scoring more goals didn’t work out as much we all enjoyed the last bit of the game asking the SC girls for a break against all of us ‘old’, worn out, and losing Alumni. They showed no mercy scoring 2 more goals in the last period to make the final score 7-3.
Although the Alumni didn’t win we all had a very good time getting back together, playing together again, and seeing everyone’s growing families!
Scrimmage WIN
Last night we traveled to Hesston JuCo for a friendly scrimmage. We played 3-30 minute periods, trying different line-ups and formations. The scrimmage was a success for the new Lady Warrior Team with a 7-0 win over the Lady Larks. Goals were scored by Kylie Yates (4), Morgan Martin, Emily Gloshen, and Lacey Rhoads.
It must have been the game of ALL MY COWS that got the girls ready for the game :) they played well, communicated effectively, and overall had a fun time finally getting to play.
The coaches we were all excited to see the girls playing together and working so well together after just a week of knowing one another!
The next test is Saturdays match up game against the Alumni, which will be entertaining in itself! If you can come out and watch the Lady Warriors take on the Alumni Lady Warriors at noon :)
HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL THERE!

3-A-Days
Ah, 3-a-days, they're finally over! I know the girls have been looking forward to this day since they started on Tuesday :) The week went well, with a lot getting accomplished. We have two days off before we're back to practice on Monday afternoon.
Wednesday we have our first scrimmage then the big ALUMNI game Saturday afternoon. I know the girls are excited to finally get to play instead of running 3X a day :)
Hope everyone has a good and relaxing weekend!

We have made it through our first day of 3-a-days!! In the morning we started out on the track with the cooper-test, 5 200's and 5 100's. In the afternoon we headed to the field to get some touches on the ball. At the end the girls played a little 8 VS 8 which made all of us coaches very excited for the season :) It was so nice to finally see all of the girls together and have a ball at their feet. We then ended the day with a swim workout that all the girls seemed to love.
This morning we started out on the soccer field working on some agility's and shooting, 2 more practices left for the day!
Thank goodness the weather has cooled down and we're able to get some good practice time in. Ah gotta love the fall season!

All Packed Up
Yesterday afternoon we headed into town to check out Gold Rush Days the town had going on, they had all sorts of vendors selling everything from food, to towels, to wooden carved bears. It was neat to walk through and a good time waster for the afternoon :)
After a good meal of pasta and watermelon the team changed and headed to some hot springs not too far away. It was a little weird at first... it was filled with mostly couples and had signs encouraging soft voices. That all changed when we showed up. Couples got out and the noise level definitely went up. We did get a few mean looks and comments but overall we had a good time and were able to relax in the nice warm water.
When we got back to camp the shower lined formed, the fire was started, and the smores got busted out once again. The rest of the night was spent just hanging out by the fire, laughing at one another, and vi sting with one of the campers from a neighboring campsite (okay not all of us, but a few of us).
Coach told everyone our goal was to leave camp this morning by 930am SHARP. Then Morgan simply replied "we'll be ready by 830" and this morning they indeed were. People were up and packing at 6:45 this morning. The trailer was loaded and we headed out at 8:16 this morning and are currently on our trek home. We just went through Colorado Springs and the next stop... Limon for some souvenir shopping!
The trip was an awesome success and I don't think anyone can say they didn't enjoy it. Between all the jokes, games, and bonding that went on we had a good time and it makes for a delightful start to this 2010 season. I'll now leave you with some quotes from the weekend:
-During the hike
"I think...." (Ki while looking at her map)
"Uh, what if we get lost up here?" "we won't Yesina has been marking the trees with Ki's knife"
-Part of the safety talk before white water rafting
"We won't lead you astray! We're not going to tell you to go this way <--- towards the alligators and waterfall, we'll encourage you ---> that way towards the martini's and cabana boys"

THE Hike
Well yesterday (friday) was nothing short of eventful! The morning got started off with breakfast and a nice 2 mile run next to a nearby lake. The girls did a good job finishing well despite the higher altitude. After the run we relaxed for just a little bit and headed out on the adventure of the day... hiking. The plan was to hike about a mile and half up to Harvard lake take in the scenery and hike the mile and half back down. Yeah things didn't go as planned. We got to what we thought as the starting point and started up! Justin and EB took the lead while Ki followed up the back. Taking Ki's map leads we headed up the "easy" path... until we came to where the trail ended... to no where. So we headed back down the path disappointed of not seeing lake. When we got to the vans Coach Morris saw the sign that somehow all 17 of missed at the begining stating TRAIL <--- the way we DIDN'T go. After a good laugh, a bit of embarassing stories, some snacks and water we started our next adventure down the right path, which was much easier. But somehow this didn't seem to be the mile and half path either. After another hour of hiking up this trail and running into another fellow hiker on his way down, we realized the lake was not in short reach. Exhausted and out of breath we all headed back down the path, excited to get back down to the vans and to the campsite for lunch.
After our late lunch, and a few maps, Coach Morris and Ki put together a bit of a scavenger hunt for the girls do around the camp grounds. Seeing the girls run around in teams searching for granola bars was entertaining to say the least :) Even though we had a late lunch half the team seemed to be 'starving' just 3 hours later so we broke out the grill for hot dogs, built a fire and enjoyed the rest of the night. As the sunset and the night got colder we all gathered around the fire enjoying the cool weather, each others company, and of course smores!
This morning started off in a bit of craziness. Coach Morris was the first one up and I'm pretty sure all the girls woke up to "TIME TO GET UP! You have 25 minutes to be ready to go rafting!" Swimsuits and toothbrushes were being scrambled too as we all raced to get ready. Thankfully we were all ready to go by 830. The guides took us down the Arkansas River and through 7 rapids in which not everyone was able to stay in the raft but thanks to all the safety talk we all made it out SAFELY.
This afternoon we're taking it easy, exploring the town and I'm sure coming back with all sorts of souviners. On the schedule tonight? The hot springs, which all the girls haven't stopped talking about since we got here Thursday night.
Hope everyone is staying as cool as we are up here!

Despite a few setbacks (van battery dying & a few mistaken routs) we finally made it to our camp site, Arkansas Valley Adventrues last night. Even though it was dark, cold, and we had little light, we were able to set up 5 tents and get everyone a spot to set up and go to bed. After sharing a few bear stories in my tent we were able to finally go to sleep around 1am. The day was long but I think we could all say we had a good time in our vans getting to know one another.
Although we had a late night the majority girls were up and ready to go this morning by 8am! I'm not sure if it was the cold that made them venture to the sun or the excitment of our hiking trip today that made them want to get out and get ready :)
Stay posted, we'll keep you updated on this adventure!

On the Road
Well Thursday has finally come and we're on the road! We were able to leave just ahead of schedule with 2 vans full of excited girls (and good food thanks to Coach's wife, Karna). Kylie and BT are meeting us out in Colorado... hopefully BT doesn't have a problem finding it! :)
Stay tuned, we'll keep you updated about how hiking, white water rafting, and sleeping in tents turns out!

Not too much longer!
As the past few weeks have gone by, all of the coaches have been preparing for the upcoming season, mowing the field, putting up nets, painting, and putting goals together. In just a few short days, all the girls will be returning to Sterling to check-in and head out to Colorado for our team trip. All of the coaches are really excited about this trip and can't wait to get the team together. Everything from white water rafting, hiking, hot springs, and some team bonding will make up the trip, by the end of it, everyone will have a story and awesome memories to kick off this 2010 season.
Girls, REMEMBER to double check the packing list Coach sent you and if you can't get certain items, let us know IMMEDIATELY!
Can't wait to see everyone and have an awesome time Colorado!

Colorado Team excursion!
All of the coaches (Coach Morris, and his two best assistants Coach Ki, and Coach EB) met up last night to go over plans for the team trip to Colorado! We went over everything from when we're leaving, what we're going to eat, where we're staying and the best part, what we're going to be doing!
Let me tell you, I doubt they'll be a dull moment on this team weekend excursion!
